A Delicate Balance
A delicate balance always exists between standing still and moving forward, between waiting and walking, between prayer and acting. A danger to avoid is the tendency to allow prayer to become a substitute for work. Prayer is not the ultimate end of the Christian life. The ultimate end of the Christian life is to bear fruit and glorify God. Prayer is simply a means to that end. Prayer is essential and prayer is good, but unless we rise from our knees to obediently follow the Lord, prayer is meaningless.

God ordered Moses and the children of Israel to move forward!  "Move forward?" the people replied timidly.  "That's right, move forward!"

"But God, there is a great big sea in our way.   Can't you see the water, God?"

They were right; a sea stood directly in their path. Yes, God saw it. But God didn't want the Israelites to see the sea; He wanted them to see Him. He wanted His people to see what He could do. The only way they could see His greatness and power was when they moved forward!

A defining moment was about to take place for Moses and the Israelites. The Red Sea was an impossible barrier for them to cross. They would move forward in faith, the sea would part, and this story would be told from one generation to the next. The Israelites would forever say, "Remember the Red Sea."

That story can be a defining moment for us, as well. It gives us instructions as to what to do when faced with an impossibility. We all have our "Red Sea" experiences! At those times, we have the opportunity to allow fear to turn to faith and cowardice to turn to courage. When we move forward we learn God's power is given in direct proportion to our obedience.
